Sonnet: When a Teacher Has Fears

Sonnet: When a Teacher Has Fears
When I have fears red ink will cease to flow
Before my pen has found out ev'ry fault,
Before high piles of essays overflow
And floorward lilt in leafy somersault;
When I behold, upon the milk-white page
the typographical mistakes galore,
And think that I may never live to wage
Successful war as grammar's guarantor;
And when I feel, dear husband, all aswoon,
That I shall never look upon thee till
Report cards fly post-haste abroad in June
And school doors close at last!--then on the hill
'Tween sanity and madness teeter I,
And long for carefree days of mid-July.
