Best Veggie and Vegan Brunch in Edinburgh

                             By Pete Martin

The Scottish do love their food and one might worry a nation associated with the haggis and deep-fried Mars bars would fall short when catering for our veggie and vegan brothers. And if that was the case, one would be very wrong! In fact, Edinburgh and Glasgow regularly tussle for the title of Britain’s most veggie and vegan- friendly cities. Here are 7 of Edinburgh’s very finest…

1.      Breakfast, Brunch and Lunch

The best veggie sausages in the world. (Or, at least, in Edinburgh).

Not only a delicious selection of vegan everything- from their stomach-busting ‘vegan ultimate breakfast’ to their ‘vegan blt’- but they’ve also got a superb veggie deli and a prime spot in the Old Town for a little bit of people-watching while you chow down.

2.      Hula Juice Bar

Don’t let the name fool you, these guys do a lot more than healthy juices nowadays. And word has clearly spread as they now have shops in Fountainbridge as well as Grassmarket.

The emphasis here is very much on healthy but that’s certainly not at the expense of taste. Whether you want some organic Scottish oats with cinnamon and honey to fuel your trek up Arthur’s Seat or a more substantial fry-up to soak up last night’s indulgences, Hula have you covered.

3.      The Black Rabbit

No compilation of Edinburgh’s finest vegan eateries would be complete without the inclusion of The Black Rabbit.

Although they might be better known for their sweet and savoury snacks, they also have a fine selection of brunches if you want something to grab-and-go (they are takeaway only). Their mustard, smoked gouda and Tofurky ham, grilled on sourdough bread is a perfect antidote to that mid-morning lull.

4.      Mimi's Bakehouse

A little bit further out, but Leith has become a popular place for many visitors, and this is arguably it’s finest vegan cafe.

If you’ve got any space after their all-day brunch, firstly, that’s very impressive, secondly, they will soon fix that with one of their famous cupcakes!

5.      Seeds For The Soul

Another of the cities proudly vegan-only establishments. Better known perhaps for the lunch and dinner offerings, they also have a decent selection earlier in the day- from sweet or savoury pancakes, to their bagels, to their hearty breakfast muffin. They are fully-licensed too, should you want a little spring in that step for your days sight-seeing…

6.      The Rose Theatre Cafe

This one is a newer addition, but it has not taken long to make a name for itself, winning Best Café, Best New Place and Best Lunch in ‘The Skinny Food And Drink Awards 2019’.

They have a nice selection of baked goods to take with you ‘for the road’.

7.      Naked Bakery

Last, but certainly not least, we have Naked Bakery.

If you are the kind of person who likes to plaster their succulent platefuls all over Instagram, then you will love this place. Ever had strawberries, bananas, blueberries, raspberries on top of pink waffles with whipped cream?  Didn’t think so! Worth stopping in just to get a look at those.
