What makes an object useful

This is a writing sample from Scripted writer Brian Kiplagat

An object is any material thing that can be seen or touched. The main reason that determines whether a particular object is to be considered the most useful, among other objects, depends completely on the subject in question. For example, let's consider building a house. In order to do so, there are certain tools and requirements that are important to produce a well-built structure. A simple example of such a tool is the hammer. In order for two pieces of wood to stick together or in a specified position, a hammer would be used to drive nails through them at specified intervals. Another way to stick two objects together would be to use glue, or in this case, wood glue. However, how long the glue would be able to hold together these two pieces of wood, is a matter that is not certain. Comparing wood glue to the nails, a safer option would be to use nails. Therefore, the ability of an object to perform a particular task to completion and in the best way possible, compared to other objects performing the same function, determines what makes an object most useful. In my own opinion, comparing different modes of transport; animals, water, motorbikes, vehicles, trains and aeroplanes, the most useful tool we have in the world is the car. Vehicles are used to transport people, animals and goods from one place to another. Today, transport has become one of the most essential tools for survival. In order for a civil servant to travel from home to work and back, an efficient and timely means of travel is required. For a businessman to carry goods from point A to B, an effective mode of transport would consider perishable and non-perishable goods. Furthermore, the invention of new, hybrid cars that vary in size, speed and functionality has enabled a wide range of jobs and businesses to function well. Ice cream trucks, for example, have been manufactured to suit the function of keeping ice cream at certain low-temperature levels. Buses, on the other hand, have been manufactured, taking into consideration the number of seats that would be available for passengers. Collectively, and by extension, they are able to drive the economy of the country in the right direction. Selectively comparing it to an aeroplane, its major limitation is speed, and in extension, more time-consuming. However, it is less costly, more fuel-efficient and most importantly, safer. Especially the fact that a majority of the world population cannot afford to use air transport regularly, road transport is definitely the most preferred.
