5 Things Every Startup Content Marketer Can Do to Have a More Productive Day
Increase your productivity with these five tasks that won't eat up your day.
Being a content marketer at a startup is a difficult job, especially when it's just you leading the team -- or you are the only one on the team. It's easy to get overwhelmed when you're in charge of coming up with original ideas, turning them into awesome content and getting that content in front of the right audience. It's also all too easy to get lost in minute tasks that have no measurable impact. At Scripted, we meet a lot of content marketers at startups who are struggling to keep up with their content efforts. Here we've put together a few ways you can maximize your time and productivity each day to help you keep everything moving forward.

1. Check Industry News Once a Day
Keeping up with news in your space is essential and can help you understand what other people in the space are saying. As your startup grows, your audience will look to you more and more for the information they care about. When you fail to regularly check industry news, you risk appearing as if your brand doesn't know what's relevant in the space. Make it a point to check a couple news outlets/blogs in your space for about 20 minutes each day.
2. Write Down 1 Content Idea
You may find that coming up with content ideas takes far longer than actually creating the content. To skip over the drawn-out thought process each time you want to produce content, start writing down ideas as they come to you. These can be article titles, ideas for social media posts, or simply topics that you want to cover later. By jotting down just one idea per day in a Word or Google doc, you'll always have a healthy reserve of ideas to fall back on.

3. Tweet or Retweet an Influencer
Tweets and retweets take just a few seconds, yet they can place you on the radars of thousands of people in your industry. It's a simple action with a potentially huge impact. Thus it's a great task to include in your daily routine -- and it keeps your brand engaged on social.
4. Read a Competitor's Blog Post
It's certainly not the first thing you'd think to do, but it can inform you of a few very important things -- like what is and isn't working for your competition, and how often/what kind of content they're posting. The point is not to mimic the competition, but to observe them. You may immediately notice things that don't appeal to you, like the tone of a post. Or things that are working for them, like asking a question to encourage comments.
5. Comment in a LinkedIn Group
Like Twitter, LinkedIn is a useful website for content marketers who want to network with others in their industry. Save formal comments for LinkedIn, and allow yourself to be more casual on Twitter. LinkedIn is the ideal platform to share knowledge and informative blog posts and engage in interesting conversations.
Together, these five things shouldn't take more than an hour. Do you have any tips on how to maximize productivity in content marketing? Share them with us in the comments section below.
